Black Women In Business: Holistic Childbirth With My Darling Doula

Despite the many advances made by modern medicine, an increasing number of women are still opting to give birth at home. However, while the idea of taking a more holistic approach to childbirth can be attractive, it can also be scary – especially for first time mothers. With that being said, knowing where and/or who to turn to for advice isn’t always easy. It’s no secret that many medical professionals push for pregnant women to give birth in hospitals, and some women may find themselves forced into making a choice without having all of the necessary information.

Recognizing this need, Fametta Darling decided to embark on a business venture to help women welcome their child(ren) into the world. By founding My Darling Doula, a company that provides services and resources for women looking for alternative birthing options, Fametta has created a space for women to explore their options. As a trained doula (someone who offers emotional and physical support throughout a woman’s pregnancy), Fametta knows first hand how important it is that women be as educated as possible when it comes to the birthing process.

Fametta believes “that the process of human childbirth is a normal physiological process perfectly designed by nature to bring babies into the world. It is an instinctive, primal experience that has its own rhythm and pace which should be respected and honored. A pregnant person should have as much control as possible in determining their care, and should be encouraged to be active participants in decision-making and self-care. When informed, supported and encouraged to follow their own instincts, they can be active givers of birth rather than passive receivers of birth technology.” When women are allowed to make an informed decision, Fametta feels that the experience of giving birth can be a “transformative event.”

My Darling Doula’s services include labor and birth support, as well as support for mothers dealing with postpartum depression. For women of color, who often find themselves feeling disconnected from their doctors, Fametta’s can provide new possibilities. Whether you’re currently with child, or in the process of planning for your future family, My Darling Doula has something to offer you.
