I Did the Big Chop. But Now What?

A big chop is a major key to getting your hair back to its most natural texture. It is an opportunity to rid your hair of dead ends and make it grow longer and fuller. Cutting your hair can also feel liberating, and when you’re natural, it can feel like embarking on a new journey. But if you haven’t yet committed to chopping or if pieces of your hair are already on the ground, take a breath, and read these 3 serious tips to rocking a TWA (teenie-weenie afro) with confidence!

Remember: It’s only hair

If you’re looking to boost your self-esteem, start by letting go of any attachments you may have with your hair. Whether or not you’ve already made the big chop, it can seem daunting letting go of your tresses. But the sooner you accept that hair is only hair, the sooner you’ll feel settled with your decision. It’ll always grow back better than the time before so you’ll be doing yourself a favor. Need some hairspiration? Check out The Cut Life on Instagram.

Moisturize OFTEN

Shea Butter Moisturizer

Now that your hair is this length, retaining moisture is one of the best ways to get a more desired look. Using water-based products will activate your curls while using oils and pomades will lock all of that moisture in. Products like Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie can be used on both wet and dry hair and for a more defined look, products with a light hold like the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard can be used after a wash and go. Prevent product build-up by co-washing often, too. Your TWA will thank you.

Don’t let styling be an overkill

natural hairstyle after the big chop

After a big chop, many women value the convenience of not needing to do much to style it. Options are limited but that can be a great thing. Sometimes, all it takes is a little water, a bit of oil and some gel to make those curls pop. But there are also styles like finger coils (beauty blogger Erica Moore has the tutorial down pact) that can help spruce up your everyday look. Just don’t overdo it – short hair means less maintenance, not more. This is also the perfect time to experiment with head wraps, turbans and other hair accessories.

There is no true amount of planning that can go into this decision. Understand that the big chop welcomes even bigger change and it may seem like forever before you hair gains length again. But with the proper hair care, you can expect astonishing results. Just take one more deep breath, and enjoy the process!
