As a woman over, 50 I have found staying fit to be quite the challenge. Every few months I find myself saying, “I have got to exercise and get in shape.” This in turn sparks my love hate relationship with the gym. I start to work out regularly for a few weeks, begin to feel better, then suddenly get bored causing my exercise to come to an abrupt halt. I am sure that many of you can relate to this never-ending cycle that constantly brings you back to the drawing board.
Well, there is good news for those of us who want to remain fit and fabulous over 50. According to research conducted by fitness expert Jill Brown, you can get into the best shape of your life in your 50’s; however, it requires commitment and dedication. Although there is no fountain of youth or magic pill, following these 3 suggestions will lead to a happier, healthier, and yes, fitter you:
- Fitness must be a non-negotiable priority – One you make up your mind to be healthy, being fit should take on a sense of urgency.
- Workout smarter as you get older – Find a workout that you like such as dancing, nature walks, or swimming so that you don’t get bored or overwork the same muscles.
- Eat healthy, be happy, and get plenty of sleep – developing a balance between work and life that allows you to eat healthy, stay hydrated, and well rested.
The bottom line is in order to be fit and fabulous in your 50’s, you need to exercise sensibly, be realistic in choosing a routine that won’t overtax your muscles, be patient knowing that it will take longer to make muscle and to lose body fat. Although the journey won’t be easy, it will definitely be worth it in the long run. Just remember, that an investment in yourself is the best one you can make.
