Black Girls Run: These Ladies Will Inspire You To Get Up And Move

For years, health has been a very serious topic in the Black community. Growing obesity rates have put many Black people, especially women, at a higher risk for contracting certain illnesses. To combat this constant struggle, two friends decided to put their heads together and come up with a way to help encourage women like they to become more active. Founded in 2009, Black Girls Run is the brainchild of Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks-Rocha.  The now nationwide movement was created to “encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority.” Black Girls Run provides women of color with free access to nearly 100 running groups across the country, with the idea that finding a community will help those who struggle with consistency and accountability.

Not only does the program gives its users access to other women who are interested in staying fit, but it also provides them with other resources that will help them along the journey. While some people may be under the impression that getting out and running is just as easy done as it is said, anyone who has ever struggled with finding their groove knows that sometimes it can be harder than many people would imagine. Thanks to Black Girls Run, countless black women have found a place to learn and grow while getting fit. As the saying goes, ‘if you look good, you feel good,’ and both Carey and Hicks-Rocha hope that Black Girls Run will be a tool that helps black women all over the country feel strong and confident.

Visit the Black Girls Run website to join and learn more about what it has to offer, and be sure to share this post with all of the women in your life who are looking for a way to get and stay active.
